Poe the Spunky Lamb - A Senior Dog Photo Session Full of Heart (and Treats!)

Recently, I had the absolute joy of photographing Poe, a curly little senior pup who reminds me of a sweet lamb with a spunky twist. Poe may be blind and rocking some very selective hearing these days, but that didn’t stop him from stealing the show during our session.

Before we started, his mom Simone shared a common concern: she worried we might not get good photos since Poe doesn’t pose like he used to and his age and limitations might make things tricky. I assured her that Poe didn’t have to pose or perform. All he had to do was be himself, and we would capture something special. And we did!

Poe was a natural. Once he discovered my treat bag (which happened to be filled with Real Meat beef treats), the fun really began. No matter where I moved that bag, he was on it! Pawing at it, sniffing it out, and even helping himself a few times when he managed to get to it before Simone or I could. His enthusiasm was contagious and had us laughing throughout the session.

What made this shoot even more meaningful is that I’ve known Simone for years. We originally connected on Instagram when she adopted a pup named Gertie from a rescue I follow called A Purposeful Rescue. After bringing Gertie home, she started an Instagram account to share the adventures of Gertie and her other pup, Gus. Later, she adopted Poe from the South LA shelter.

Being able to capture this stage of Poe's life was truly an honor. Sessions like this are a beautiful reminder that senior dogs, no matter their age or abilities, have so much life, personality, and love to share.

Thank you, Simone and Poe, for trusting me with these memories.
